Poetry #5
The Garden of My Soul

The next two selections were written anonymously and passed along to me by a friend. I fell in love with both of them and decided to add them to my page. I hope you enjoy both as well!

HEAVENS GROCERY STORE

I was walking down lifes highway a long time ago
One day I saw a sign that read Heavens Grocery Store
As I got a little closer, the door came open wide
And when I came to myself, I was standing inside

I saw a host of angels they were standing everywhere
One handed me a basket and said, My child shop with care.
Everything a Christian needed was in that grocery store
And what you couldnt carry you could come back the next day for more

First I got some patience love was in the same row
Further down was understanding you need that everywhere you go
I got a box or two of wisdom and a bag or two of faith
I just couldnt miss the Holy Ghost it was all over the place

I stopped to get some strength and courage
To help me run this race
But by then my basket was getting full
And I remembered I needed some grace

Then I started to the counter to pay my grocery bill
For I thought I had everything to do the Masters will
As I went up the aisle I saw prayer and had to put that in
For I knew when I stepped outside I would run right into sin

Peace and joy were plentiful
They were on the last shelf
Songs and praises were hanging near
So I just helped myself

Then I said to the angel, How much do I owe?
He smiled and said, Just take it everywhere you go.
Once more I asked, How much do I owe?
Again he smiled and said, My child, Jesus paid your bill a long, long time ago.

CHRISTMAS TREES AND STRAWBERRY SUMMERS

What Id really like is a life of Christmas trees and strawberry summers
A walk through the zoo with a pocketful of bubble gum and a string of balloons
Id keep the world in springtime and carefree days with rainbow endings

But life is more than birthday parties
Life is more than candied apples

Id rather hear the singing than the weeping
Id rather see the healing than the violence
Id rather feel the pleasure than the pain

Id rather know security than fear
Id like to keep the cotton candy coming

But life if more than fingers crossed and life is more than wishing
And of course Id rather not. Id rather pretend that doesnt include me.
Id rather look the other way, not answer the phone, and be much too busy to read the paper
But I said YES and that means risk
It means here I am, ready or not

O Christmas trees and strawberry summers
You are what I like, and you are real

But so are hunger and misery and hate-filled red faces
So in confrontation
So in injustice
Discipleship means sometimes its going to rain in your face

But when youve been blind and now you see
When youve been deaf and now you hear
When youve never understood and now you know
Once you know who God calls you to be
Youre not content with sitting in corners

Theres got to be some alleluia shouting
Some speaking out
Some standing up
Some caring
Some sharing
Some community
Some risk

Discipleship means living what you know
Discipleship mean Thank you Lord

For Christmas trees and strawberry summers
And even for rain in my face
