Plight of the Homeless
My Stories and Writings

Did you know that the state of homelessness grows each and every day? They say our economy is looking up and jobs are plentiful. If that is the case, then why are there more and more families ending up in the streets and under the bridges living in carboard boxes and begging for every bit they put in their mouth.

Here is a link to some stories I wrote about the people I met while living in Colorado.

Heart Stories

Several years ago, I owned a music newspaper in Kansas City and in Durango, Colorado. During my stay in Colorado, I spent several days living with and getting to know the many homeless in that city. I stayed in the homeless shelter during the evenings and nights. I sat in the park and walked around town during the daytime finding out what it was like to be without a home or just a place to hang my hat.

I found out after spending many hours with these people that they are just like you and me. No, they don't have a job or a place to sleep sometimes. But they are human beings, created in the same image that you and I are. They aren't very nice to look at, nor pleasant to be around. But they do have feelings. They have open minds, big hearts and the want and need to be with other people.

Being homeless gave me a new perspective on life. It made me realize that at any given moment, I could be out on the street with no place to live, no food to eat, and no one to care about me. It can happen ... in a New York minute ... to any of us. They are families down their luck. They are veterans who served their country and now are left in the cold. They are handicapped and mentally ill. And they are people ... just like you and me.

I know that the problem of the homeless is a countrywide dilemma, if not a worldwide one. It is getting worse every day and I believe that we can do something about it if we only try. It can be as simple as giving someone some change for a cup of coffee on a cold morning ... or showing them the way to a food pantry or shelter. Whatever it is, remember this ... we are entertaining angels unaware, and it may just be an angel that you are helping along the way.

During the time I was with the homeless, I put down into words my feelings of the impact that these people had on me. Please ... do something to help out the homeless problem in our city and many others. Your rewards will be many!

BROTHERS AND SISTERS

She once was a mother, had a family of her own
But they left her with nothing, sad and alone
He once was a carpenter, strong, brave and true
Now he's begging for money for a sandwich or two

They're my brothers and my sisters
That live on the street
My brothers and my sisters
These ones that I meet
They're living in boxes
And eat what you don't
Cause nobody loves them
And nobody won't

Why are they like this with no where else to turn
When the fire inside them is still willing to burn
Can't you see they're people -- just like you and me
But there is one difference -- they're prisoners and we're free

They're my brothers and my sisters
That live on the street
My brothers and my sisters
These ones that I meet
They're living in boxes
And eat what you don't
Cause nobody loves them
And nobody won't

The next time you're traveling down along the street
And my brothers and my sisters you happen to meet
Tell them you'll remember, tell them that you care
Tell them that you love them and that you'll always be there

They're your brothers and your sisters
That live on the street
Your brothers and your sisters
These ones that you meet
They're living in boxes
And eat what you don't
Cause nobody loves them
And nobody won't

Richard Tripp dedicates his life to the homeless of Kansas City. Take time and visit his site and if you can, give some help from your heart! His organization is "Care of Poor People, Inc." and a very worthwhile charity!
